When MCHFT were funded £25.2 million for a new Critical Care and Theatre rebuild it was important that the project was completed on time, within budget and without any problems. The new facility aims to help the Trust with the expected rise in demand for Critical Care and Theatre services over the coming years, so it was crucial that the new flooring remained durable for the foreseeable future.

Installing over 15,000 m2 of flooring

After utilising UZIN’s support to help rectify a long standing issue with a failing floor, MCHFT worked with UZIN and the flooring contractor iFloor Ltd to specify suitable systems for the new building as well as many other refurbishment projects. Each of which had their own requirements and challenges. By working in partnership with UZIN the Trust were able to install over 15,000 m2 of flooring without any of the previous problems it had experienced. The new flooring is very robust and helps withstand the heavy footfall and traffic load.

A suitable range of UZIN products were used for the refurbishments.  For example UZIN NC 157 was used as a deep fill in the new MRI unit to provide cost effective build up.  UZIN NC 157 produces an extremely low-stress substrate even in higher thicknesses and was used in in depths between 20 to 50 mm. It has also been awarded an EC1 plus classification for being solvent free and meets the requirements for occupational health and safety.  This was important as MCHFT are dedicated to delivering excellent standards of care, so required a sustainable and low emission flooring installation.

Improving quality and safety of patient care

The new facility has enabled MCHFT to further improve the quality and safety of patient care. The building has replaced the existing Theatres, along with the existing Intensive Care and High Dependency units, with state-of-the-art services. Due to the success of the projects, MCHFT has continued to work with UZIN for the subfloor and Tarkett for the vinyl floor covering on all further flooring refurbishments. In recent years UZIN systems have been used to install new subfloors in the following refurbished areas: the Treatment Centre, Outpatients’ Entrance, Main Entrance numerous Wards, MRI unit and the former Sexual Health Clinic.

Paul Swindells, Senior Capital Project Manager, Estates & Facilities Division at MCHFT said “The new flooring has helped breathe new life into the facilities which have been refurbished. The finish and look of the flooring materials are first class and I can testify to their durability.”
