Renovation of the Icebreaker Ship "Frej" in Luleå Harbor
The icebreaking ship Frej underwent a significant renovation at Luleå Harbor, involving approximately 200 sqm of flooring. The ship's steel subfloor posed unique challenges, requiring specialized solutions to meet the demands of its harsh operating environment. With the vessel's function and stability in mind, the project aimed to achieve a durable, level surface for LVT installation while maintaining the ship’s structural integrity during the process.

CHALLENGES AND REQUIREMENTS
The renovation presented several unique hurdles:
- Logistics: Transporting and lifting pumping equipment, including a leveling compound, required a helicopter to place it on board.
- Leveling on water: Ensuring the ship remained level and steady in the water during the application process was essential for achieving a flat surface.
Solution
To address these challenges, a comprehensive step-by-step plan was implemented:
- Steel Subfloor Preparation: The steel surface was thoroughly ground to remove imperfections and prepare it for priming.
- Priming:UZIN PE 460 combined with sand was applied to ensure proper adhesion of the leveling compound.
- Leveling: The ship's subfloor was expertly leveled using UZIN FusionTec premium levelling compound UZIN NC 580, a product designed for high-performance applications.
- LVT Installation: Luxury Vinyl Tiles (LVT) were securely installed using UZIN KE 2000 S, ensuring a resilient and durable finish.
